Frisco, TX – February 4, 2010 – The Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST) announced today the recipients of the HITRUST InfoSec Awards for 2009. The InfoSec Awards recognize organizations and individuals that have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the advancement of information security in the healthcare industry. The organization honored for its contributions is Kaiser Permanente and the individual recognized is Jason Taule, Director, Corporate Information Security for ViPS, a General Dynamics Information Technology company.

“By identifying and sharing the experiences of the InfoSec Award winners, HITRUST is helping to move the healthcare industry forward with examples of exemplary innovation and leadership in information security,” said Daniel Nutkis, Chief Executive Officer, HITRUST. “Greater collaboration and knowledge-sharing benefits all of us who are committed to improving the protection of health information. I applaud the winners of the 2009 InfoSec Awards and look forward to witnessing the continued innovation by them and others in the coming year.”

The InfoSec Awards acknowledge successes in multiple categories relating to information security in the healthcare industry. Kaiser Permanente is being honored in the category of “Contribution to the Healthcare Industry” for its willingness to collaborate with organizations of all types for the enhancement of the protection of health information. Kaiser is regularly recognized as a leader in health information technology and its professionals are active participants in key health information technology committees and work groups. The company’s commitment to sharing its own experiences and lessons learned helps to ensure the entire industry is focused on information protection.

Jason Taule, Director, Corporate Information Security for ViPS, a General Dynamics Information Technology company and health IT solutions provider, is being recognized as an individual award winner in the category of “Security and Privacy Practices” for his leadership in overseeing all aspects of information security in the organization and his ongoing efforts to advance the healthcare industry and information security internally and with customers. One such effort includes his involvement in providing healthcare information technology services as part of healthcare reform to a U.S. federal agency.

The InfoSec Awards will be presented to the winners at the HITRUST Leadership Roundtable event, hosted by Verizon Business, taking place February 8 – 9, 2010, in Washington, D.C. The Leadership Roundtable is an exclusive and collaborative forum for executives responsible for the protection of healthcare information to explore issues relating to healthcare information security, privacy and risk management. The February event will include presentations from the InfoSec Award winners and feature topics such as business partner compliance, breach response and coordination, and government coordination and relations.

The 2010 InfoSec Award nominations are open now to individuals and organizations within the healthcare industry or that support the industry. Information security vendors are eligible for nomination and may also submit a nomination on behalf of an end-user. The Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST) was born out of the belief that information security should be a core pillar of, rather than an obstacle to, the broad adoption of health information systems and exchanges. HITRUST, in collaboration with healthcare, business, technology and information security leaders, has established the Common Security Framework (CSF), a certifiable framework that can be used by any and all organizations that create, access, store or exchange personal health and financial information. Beyond the establishment of the CSF, HITRUST is also driving the adoption of and widespread confidence in the framework and sound risk management practices through awareness, education, advocacy and other outreach activities.
